Event Details From Chronicle of the Van Hoosen Centenary Farm, pp 178-179:

She (Bertha) assisted with the organization of a large maternity hospital for the middle class, the Lewis Maternity Hospital. When Loyola University Medical School received its grade A rating the authorities were advised to place a man at the head of the Department of Obstetrics but the suggestion was not heeded, and Bertha Van Hoosen was granted the coveted position. Father Fury, in whose hands the final decision rested, informed Bertha that while some authorities were prejudiced against women, Loyola was prejudiced for her. When her service, after many years, was ended Loyola University conferred upon Bertha Van Hoosen an honorary LL.D. in 1926.
